How SAVE Foundation Widens the Door for Cape Town's Children
Two children can grow up a few kilometres apart in Cape Town and still inherit completely different starting points. In under-resourced communities, stretched school and ECD budgets often mean fewer learning materials, fewer after-school activities, and fewer safe places for a child to go once the final bell rings. For some families, even a guaranteed daily meal isn’t something to take for granted. For close to two decades, SAVE Foundation has worked to close that gap — not from a distance, but from inside the schools, early learning centres and community organisations where it is felt most directly.

These figures, drawn from SAVE’s 2025 programme reporting, describe a single organisation working across food security, education and youth development in communities where each of those areas is under pressure at once.
Listening Before Building
SAVE Foundation was founded in Cape Town in 2006, after its founders saw how little support many local preschools and community projects were receiving. What began as help for a handful of early learning centres has since grown into a broader programme spanning education, food support, youth development, sport, swimming and community initiatives.

That principle shapes how every programme is built. Instead of arriving with a fixed plan, SAVE works alongside local schools, community leaders and organisations to understand what is already happening on the ground — and to strengthen it, rather than replace it.
A Meal Before a Lesson
For a child, wellbeing and learning are rarely separate problems. Hunger makes it harder to concentrate in class, and a lack of resources can slow down learning long before a child ever falls behind. Unsupervised, unstructured afternoons can carry their own risks. Food security is therefore one of SAVE's central commitments. In 2025 alone, the organisation provided a daily meal to 500 children and reached a further 1,000 people through its Mandela Day initiatives. Community vegetable gardens supported by SAVE also feed directly into local soup kitchens, extending the impact well beyond the organisation's own programmes.
Building the Centres That Build Children
SAVE's support for early childhood development looks past short-term assistance. The organisation works with ECD centres on resources, teacher development and infrastructure, aiming to help those centres become stronger and more self-sustaining over time. In 2025, SAVE supported 500 children through its education programmes and helped 90 children make the transition into Grade 1.
