About the Marine Conservation Internship
Gansbaai, on the Western Cape coastline approximately two hours from Cape Town, is one of the most significant sites for white shark research in the world. The cold, nutrient-rich waters of the area — particularly around Dyer Island and Shark Alley — support one of the highest-density white shark populations in the Southern Hemisphere and attract researchers from marine institutions globally. This internship places you alongside marine biologists working on the research vessel — participating in shark identification, tagging, ocean monitoring, and ecological data collection. White sharks are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. The research conducted at Gansbaai — including population estimates, movement patterns, and behaviour data — directly informs conservation policy at a national and international level. Your internship contributes to that body of knowledge.

What You Will Do
During this marine conservation programme in Gansbaai, you will take part in hands-on activities both at sea and on land. Assist on shark cage diving and whale watching boats, support marine data collection, and observe species such as sharks, whales, dolphins, and seals.
You will also contribute to conservation efforts through penguin and seabird rehabilitation, beach clean-ups, and environmental projects. Snorkelling and kelp dives provide additional insight into marine ecosystems, combining practical experience with real-world conservation learning.
FIELD RESEARCH
Work alongside marine biologists on the research vessel during daily shark monitoring operations

White sharks face significant global population pressure from bycatch, finning, and habitat disruption, and are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN. Long-term photo-identification and tagging datasets — the kind of work interns contribute to directly at Gansbaai — are what allow researchers to track population trends and inform the marine protected area policy that governs this coastline.
Do I need a science background?
A background in marine biology, zoology, ecology, environmental science, or a related field is an advantage and allows you to engage more deeply with the research methodology. However, SAVE Foundation also accepts interns from non-science backgrounds who have a strong commitment to marine conservation and are willing to learn. All interns are trained in the specific techniques used on site.
Is scuba diving or swimming ability required?
The primary work is conducted from the research vessel on the surface. Scuba certification is not required. A reasonable comfort level with being at sea is helpful — the waters off Gansbaai can be rough, and some people experience seasickness, particularly in the early days.
Will I be in the water with sharks?
Cage diving experiences are available separately as a personal activity. The internship work is conducted from the research vessel. Whether you choose to cage dive is entirely your own decision and is not part of the academic or research programme.
How do I get to Gansbaai?
Gansbaai is approximately a two-hour drive from Cape Town. Transport from Cape Town to Gansbaai is arranged as part of your placement logistics.
Can this internship count toward academic credit?
Many participants successfully use this internship to fulfil university requirements in marine biology, ecology, or environmental science programmes. We can provide supervisor documentation your university can review — confirm your specific credit pathway with your academic advisor before applying.
