About The Pre Veterinary Internship Programme

This pre veterinary internship in South Africa takes place on a working livestock farm in Cathcart, Eastern Cape. The programme provides structured, practical experience in animal care, basic veterinary procedures, and wildlife conservation within a supervised and educational environment.

Participants assist with daily farm activities, work closely with animals, and observe veterinary practices under guidance. The internship also includes exposure to nearby game reserves, where participants learn about wildlife conservation, animal behaviour, and ecosystem management. This programme is ideal for students and individuals interested in pursuing a career in veterinary science, animal care, or conservation, and who want structured, real-world experience before further studies.

What You Will Do

Hands-On Animal Care

Work with horses, sheep, cattle, and small animals while assisting with feeding, treatments, and general care.

Veterinary Exposure

Observe and assist with veterinary procedures, animal health checks, and basic treatments under supervision.

Wildlife & Conservation

Visit nearby reserves and learn about wildlife management, conservation practices, and tracking.

About the Program

Where classroom knowledge meets wild Africa

SAVE Foundation’s Pre-Vet Internship & Safari program is one of South Africa’s most comprehensive hands-on animal experience programs. Based on a working livestock farm in Cathcart, South Africa. The program is designed for individuals looking to explore or enter the professional fields of veterinary science, animal welfare, wildlife conservation and animal management through practical learning rather than classroom-only study.

The course is structured into three distinct learning areas, providing both a theoretical and practical approach to working with animals in the African context, from the large to the small, from the bush to the home, and from the chronic to the cared for.

A full spectrum of animal experience

African Wildlife Conservation

Through exposure to nearby reserves and field-based activities, participants learn about wildlife behaviour, habitat preservation, and the challenges facing conservation in South Africa. The focus is on responsible, ethical interaction with wildlife while understanding the role conservation plays in protecting species.

Agricultural Livestock

Visit livestock farms across the region. Gain hands-on experience in inoculations, nutrition, pregnancy testing, lambing and agricultural health management with a variety of animals including cattle, sheep, goats, and other farm animals. Learn through fieldwork, lectures, and mentorship from veterinarians.
