STEM, Robotics & Computer Science Programme
Engineering and computer science students deliver coding, robot-building and computer-literacy sessions to learners at partner schools, applying their technical knowledge and building the confidence of the next generation.
STEM, Robotics & Computer Science Programme
Access to computer science, coding and robotics education remains deeply unequal in South African schools: many under-resourced schools have limited or no dedicated computer science teaching capacity, despite strong demand from learners for exposure to these subjects. Where STEM outreach does reach these schools, evidence from South African education researchers consistently shows it broadens learners’ sense of what careers and further study are open to them.
This programme places university engineering, computer science and robotics students alongside learners at partner schools to deliver structured coding, robotics and computational-thinking sessions — building simple robotics kits, introductory programming exercises, or computer-literacy sessions, depending on the school’s existing resources and the group’s technical background. University students apply and communicate their own technical knowledge to a non-expert audience, a skill directly relevant to outreach, teaching and technical-communication components of STEM degrees.

FAQ's
What equipment is required, and is it provided?
Basic robotics kits and equipment are coordinated through our local school partners; groups wanting to bring or fund specific additional equipment can do so, and this is confirmed during itinerary design.
Can this programme be run alongside general teaching or ECD placements for mixed-interest groups?
Yes — mixed groups with both STEM and general-education academic interests are common, and the itinerary is split accordingly across partner schools.
